Christmas looks a little different this year for us, but one nice aspect of being removed from our usual traditions is that we have been allowed to recreate our own Christmas necessities.

For me, Christmas is about lights, and cookies. Thank goodness Paul was happy to let me string colored lights on the outside of our boat, and warm fairy lights inside the galley. As far as Christmas cookies go- our stove tends to make our boat very hot, but we’ve been enjoying store bought cookies with almost as much zest.

For Paul, Christmas really is defined by a giant Christmas feast, usually at some random starting point in the day (like 3pm). We are hosting our boat friends over to a big dinner that starts in between lunch and dinner, and cooking some traditional holiday foods to help keep us all feeling festive.

But in the many ways Christmas looks different this year- we are on a boat, our family is far away, there are mega yachts everywhere we look, the food is different, the kitchen is different, the time zone is different, did I mention we are on a boat, and its hot, blue-green and sunny most times of the day. – I find that the best parts of Christmas aren’t lights or presents or cookies, but reminiscing a year together, and telling your important people that you love them.
Paul and I are a little isolated this holiday season. After a year of planning, escaping, traveling, sailing, going and even go-going it’s probably no surprise. We even have family and friends coming to visit us in the next few weeks. But still, the feeling of nostalgia for a home we no longer have and more importantly the people from that place that we still do is large in our life right now.
So to you-our dear friends and family. Thank you for following and supporting us on this crazy first year. And know that we’re down here, floating at anchor in a French cove, listening to Christmas music, and thinking of you all.
Merry Christmas from Sint Maarten- or Saint Martin, Joyeux Noel.
love
Paul and Lindsay
PS One year ago, Paul was floating the idea of buying a boat to me, in a very casual tone. Just to let you know how far we’ve come and how fast we’ve moved. More on our origin story later.
