Our life aboard the BlueBelle

We leave Saint Martin on Saturday, but I would be remiss if I didn’t write about SXM Paws, an animal rescue organization that I have been volunteering at for the past month.

Mothers and pups, both looking for homes but relaxing in style while they wait.

SXM Paws is a lovely rescue organization that primarily focuses on rescuing and rehoming the dogs of Saint Martin who find themselves down on their luck. Much of their activity is volunteer run and donation based, but when you visit their shelter, you’ll find a well loved spaced.

Friendly grown dogs who need walks, love, and homes.

I decided to volunteer some time at a local organization in order to feel more connected to our neighborhood, especially when our neighborhood frequently changes. Luckily, they are an organization that accepts short term, (or long term) volunteerism. Do not let upcoming departures stop you from coming in! One afternoon makes a difference.

If you have an afternoon to spend, they welcome you in. If you have a month or two, they welcome you. There are always kennels to scrub, poop to pick up, baths to give, dogs to walk, and very importantly: dogs to socialize. These dogs are looking for homes, so they need help learning their manners and feeling comfortable enough to let their personalities shine. Which means, play and cuddles are essential too.

For visiting in person, I suggest water proof, laceless shoes. They will be chewed on.

SXM Paws looks for in person volunteers to help, they look for people flying to the States to accompany adopted animals on airplanes, they look for monetary donations to buy food and medicine, and they look for people to help to get their message out! Your next pet might be living in Saint Martin right now, waiting for you.

Puppies cooling off in style.

We don’t have the ability to adopt a dog into our life yet, but they graciously gave me the gift of unlimited puppy kisses and the serotonin that only a wagging tail can give.

Nine wagging tails, from Mama Gracie.

If you are like us, and live on a boat that’s currently anchored in Simpson Bay- it was an easy experience for me to dinghy in, tie up at Lagoonies, and walk for ten minutes to get there. Cruisers have also provided short term fosters on their boats, and even flown with pups back into the States. If you have young children, or teenagers who need to complete volunteer hours, this is a great space for them as well- all are welcome.

Some of the larger dogs have specialized in jumping onto the bench that puppy legs cannot quite reach yet.

So cool you were able to help out, scooping poop, cuddling, walking and spreading the word. Hope some of those cute puppies will find good homes.
