Our life aboard the BlueBelle

Hello! Happy New Year!

Simpson Bay fireworks at midnight

We’ve been a bit slow on posts recently because we’ve been traveling, and we’ve had boat guests. But life aboard the BlueBelle is still thriving, and I wanted to write something just to keep our friends and family happily reading.

Paul and I get asked all kinds of questions from our friends and family on land. But I’m taking the lead today and answering the question about what products I use now that we’re full time boat people- My Get Ready With Me, but much less trendy.

When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is brush my teeth, and then apply moisturizer with SPF. I like to use Cetaphil or Cerave, depending on whatever I’m able to acquire. After that, I immediately apply an SPF 70 to my face and neck with Neutrogena. This is all PRE coffee and pre stepping outside, so I feel pretty accomplished once I tromp upstairs. I have also started putting this SPF 70 on the backs of my hands. Then-Coffee. And we listen to the morning Net on Channel 10.

One we are on deck, that is when Paul and I apply Sunbum 70 spf to our body. We like this brand because it is reef safe and has a nice smell. Paul’s usually shirtless most of the time on the boat, so he gets his face and neck and upper body pretty well. I’m big on shoulders and neck, since my face is usually pretty ghost white from the Neutrogena. We both reapply when necessary due to sweat and jumping into the sea. If its a sail day, we really double down on sun screen application and putting on long sleeve, hooded and thumbed sun shirts, I’ll wear leggings from Waterlust, and hats and sunnies. My favorite hats are bucket hats because they cover such a wide surface area, while Paul has a cowboy hat we bought in curacao that he rocks (he will state that it is NOT a cowboy hat but declined to offer a better description…so cowboy it is). we have a big collection of sunnies, but I like the ones that can float, and are polarized, and not too expensive.

hat, sunnies, SPF

We don’t use any cologne or perfume, or soap with strong smells because of the increased likelihood of mosquito bites. When we jump in the water, we shower at the backdeck and use Stream 2 Sea shampoo and bodywash, and then Stream 2 Sea leave in conditioner. There is a fair amount of nudity on the boat, but our embarrassment over nudity has declined to almost zero percent since moving on board. As a pro tip, I sometimes put Stream 2 Sea leave in conditioner in my hair before we swim to prevent tangles once I’m out. I don’t wash my hair every day if we’re swimming every day, and limit myself to a fresh water rinse for hair and body only during most days. This limits water consumption and also effort.

my birthday haul included my favorite castile soap.

At night, we always rinse off before getting into bed to get the sweat and sunscreen off. Our favorite soap to use is Dr Bronners Peppermint because its not bad for the environment and it smells amazing. That’s it for Paul- but I usually like to put on some kind of moisturizer for night, since the sun/wind/salt can dry out the dermis. After washing my face with water, I’ll again use Cerave or Cetaphil without SPF and lather it on thickly. I’ll use Vaseline or something like that on my hands.

I am also a sun protection, cat petting super spy.

That’s it for us! We used to have much more complicated grooming and bathing schedules, but we have simplified things to mostly soap and water. Paul also gets a beard trim at the back of the boat about every 10 days or so, to keep him presentable.

Hope this gives everyone a tiny bit of insight into our life and day to day. We used to be fancy Californians, but we’ve really pared down a lot of product consumption and complication. Most days its just a rinse and some SPF, but I think our hair is just as shiny, our skin just as healthy, and our smiles just as bright.

More updates soon!

Great info and pictures! Seems like a lot but I guess all of that sun and saltwater takes a toll. Small price to pay for living in paradise:)
